Bloomberg, Apple Inc is in talks to integrate Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) engine, Gemini, into the iPhone. This has the potential to be a huge deal that shakes up the AI industry.
According to sources, the two companies are actively negotiating for Apple to license Gemini, Google’s suite of generative AI models, to support several new features coming to iPhone software this year. Apple also recently discussed with OpenAI and considered using their model.
If an agreement between Apple and Google is reached, it will strengthen the cooperation in the field of search that already exists between the two companies. For years, Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, has paid Apple billions of dollars each year to make its search engine the default option in the Safari web browser on iPhones and other devices. The two sides have not yet decided on the terms or branding of the AI deal, or how it will be implemented.
This deal will give Gemini a major advantage with the potential for billions of new users. However, it could also be a sign that Apple’s efforts regarding artificial intelligence haven’t gone as far as many had hoped, and could potentially trigger tougher antitrust scrutiny of both companies.
